Aren’t vampires supposed to live forever? Universal’s CG animated family film “Despicable Me” trounced last week’s box office winner, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” with an estimated $60.1 million this weekend. “Eclipse,” after raking in the cash last weekend, squeaked out an estimated additional $33 million in its sophomore weekend, for an eleven-day total of $237 million domestically.

Nimrod Antal’s “Predators” performed better than expected, with a third-place weekend finish and an estimated $25.3 million.

The dip for “Eclipse,” just under 50 percent from last weekend (remember, there was a monsterous Wednesday and Thursday padding the stats), was far smaller than “New Moon,” which dove over 70 percent in its second week.

“Toy Story 3″ continued to bring in audiences, bringing in an estimated $22 million, for a four-week total domestic take of $340.2 million. This makes “Toy Story 3″ the highest grossing Pixar film of all time domestically.

Focus Features’ “The Kids Are All Right” opened in limited release this weekend, and boasts the best opening screen average of the year at $72,127. The film grossed an estimated $504,888 at seven locations.

The top two slots at the box office on the Fourth Of July weekend were no surprise to anyone, as “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “The Last Airbender” debuted to the front of the pack. However, there are patches of gray in their silver linings.

“Eclipse” started strong, as expected, with the highest midnight debut in history (beating “Twilight” predecessor “New Moon” by a few shillings) with a $30 million take. It’s five-day total sits at a whopping estimate of $162 million, yet even this take can be seen as a disappointment, as Summit Entertainment was projecting a $175 million take over the Fourth of July weekend. “New Moon” earned $165 million in the same time last November.

“The Last Airbender,” however, didn’t fare nearly as well. Poor reviews – the worst of director M. Night Shyamalan’s career – and backlash from “everything must be in 3D!” marketing brought the anime adaptation to its knees, with an estimated weekend take of $40.6 million.

Third place went to “Toy Story 3,” dropping from first place with an estimated $30.1 million. Each of the returning top ten films showed drops of 49% or greater.

“Cyrus” expanded into 77 theaters nationally, cracking the top ten with a weekend estimated take of $770,000.

Eleven years later, the American moviegoers’ affection for Woody and Buzz Lightyear has only grown stronger. “Toy Story 3,” Pixar’s return to their feature film roots, packed theaters in its opening weekend to the tune of an estimated $109 million.

While a good chunk of the receipts came from showing the movie in 3D, it would have handily beat all comers this weekend, as the only competition was last week’s winner, “The Karate Kid” (coming in second with $29 million) and “Jonah Hex,” landing in theaters with an eighth-place, $5 million thud.

Armond White notwithstanding, “Toy Story 3″ had critics and exiting audiences singing its praises. It’s currently the third-highest reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes, and has filmgoers saying they’ll return to see it again at a whopping 68 percent.

While it handily trumps the $70 million opening weekend of “The Incredibles,” “Toy Story 3″ had the same audience numbers as earlier Pixar releases “Monsters, Inc.” and “Finding “Nemo.”

The family-friendly reboot of “The Karate Kid” not only won the battle of 1984 redux, but won the weekend’s box office race outright. The inspirational Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan tale led all films with an estimated $56 million this weekend, with the big-screen “A-Team” outing lagging far behind in second, with $26 million.

Including “Shrek Forever After,” “Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time” and “Marmaduke,” family-oriented films made up four of the top ten over the weekend. 45 percent of the people purchasing tickets for “The Karate Kid” were bringing children, not yet born when Ralph Macchio put on the gi in the original.

The poor showing of “The A-Team” comes as a surprise to most industry analysts, who had pegged the Joe Carnahan action fest for $45 million on average. The film was made for just over $100 million.

The summer of theatrical discontent continues, with “Shrek Forever After” trumping four new releases in its third week of exhibition. The 3D family film earned an estimated $25.3 million over the weekend.

“Get Him To The Greek” performed the best of the freshman crop, bringing in an estimated $17.4 million and landing in second place behind the big green ogre. Lionsgate’s gamble to hold “Killers” back from critics seems to have worked, with a third-place take of $16.1 million; the live-action / CG hybrid “Marmaduke” popped in sixth place with $11.3 million; sci-fi thriller “Splice” limped into eighth place with $7.4 million.

Both “Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time” and “Sex And The City 2″ had drops of over 50 percent from their opening weekend tallies. The silver lining is the budget for each film: it’ll take a lot longer for “Sands Of Time” to recoup the $200 million budget, while the second Carrie Bradshaw film outing will have made back its $100 million budget by the end of June in domestic receipts alone.

By November 30, 2010, the country’s first megaplex movie theater will have closed its doors for the final time.

The AMC Grand (located off of I-35E and Northwest Highway, in Dallas), according to reports, cannot come to an agreement on lease terms with Kansas City-based Entertainment Properties Trust (who owns the property), so they’ve opted to pull the plug.

Built in 1995, it was the first theater in the country to house more than 20 screens (and feature stadium seating!). Seems hard to believe that only 15 years ago, the megaplex was the exception, rather than the rule, for movie viewing.

AMC, formerly Durwood Theaters (I only add it because it makes me chuckle), was one of the few movie theater chains not to go bankrupt during the last recession (which is apparently over?). The area around The Grand is now populated with more strip clubs, sex-toy stores, and chain restaurants than anything else. Combine that with the fact that it’s nearly impossible to find the entrance to the parking lot, and it’s easy to see why people might be opting to see their movies elsewhere.

The fact is, though, they don’t. The AMC Grand is still one of the top 20 highest grossing theaters in the Dallas area. It sounds like Entertainment Properties Trust would like to get another theater chain into the property when AMC vacates at the end of the year.

Still, it’s sad to hear that it’s closing. I just made the trek over there to see “Iron Man 2″ (The Grand is in a pretty great place for meeting friends who live in the boonies), and the woman who sold me a pretzel made me the happiest girl in all the land.

“What movie are you seeing?” she asked, as she tried to sprinkle parmesan on my pretzel.

“‘Iron Man 2′.”

“Oh! You look just like that girl who’s in it. I think she’s called ‘Black Widow’ or something,” she said.

After blinking a couple of times in complete confusion, I looked at her with squinty eyes. “Are you talking about Scarlett Johansson?”

“Yes! That’s her!”

And while I loved the movie anyway (read the RCC review here, if you missed it), I have to tell you that nothing could have made my day more fantastic. Just don’t ruin it and tell me that AMC only hires blind people or pathological liars to work the refreshment stand.

While Carrie Bradshaw and crew won the Friday gate receipts with a strong $13.1 million, poor word-of-mouth and brutal critic’s reaction trickled down to dampen the take during the weekend.

Disney’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time” landed in third place on its debut weekend, with a lower-than-expected $30.1 million estimate.

While the fourth “Shrek” film from DreamWorks performed far weaker than expected, bringing in an estimated $71 million in an opening weekend where it was projected to earn twice that, the real story might be the colossal thud “MacGruber” made landing.

The “Saturday Night Live” sketch adaptation brought in an underwhelming $4.1 million, ranking sixth on the weekend. It was beaten by the third week of “Iron Man 2,” the second week of “Robin Hood,” and the second week of “Letters To Juliet.”
