The city of Pittsburgh, PA looks like it will have a strong presence in movie theaters over the next few months. “The Dark Knight Rises” was filmed there and judging from the trailers so far, many bridges, buildings, and even a football stadium will be trashed in it. There seems to be far less destruction of property in “Won’t Back Down”, but there is still plenty of civic unrest.

“Won’t Back Down” is about a mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who has an illiterate daughter and her efforts to upgrade the inner city school system. She gets a teacher (Viola Davis) on her side and begins to protest, talk to other parents, and get in front of the city school board to try to make things better for kids. It looks like a pretty typical movie, especially when the Kelly Clarkson tune kicks up. However, these movies are sometimes uplifting and it’s always a good thing to encourage parents to be more involved with their kid’s education.

This also has a great cast, in addition to Gyllenhaal and Davis. Oscar Isaac, Rosie Perez, Ving Rhames, and Holly Hunter are all in this, which may be an indication that the script is good, at least good enough to attract those names. Of course, it could be another “Dangerous Minds”, just without a Coolio song.

A lot certainly happened last week- Theon took Winterfell, Sansa was almost raped, Joffrey was being Joffrey, and Dany’s babies were dragon-napped. As the season half of the season begins its wind-down, the story really doesn’t.
Theon learns that overnight Bran and his brother have snuck out of Winterfell with the help of Osha and Hodor and are missing. Naturally he can’t let them get away, what with his impeccable reputation at stake, so after beating a man who eluded that his thoughts had been clouded with visions of wildling love, Theon sets off with a small band to find them. Bran, however, is a little too smart in realizing anyone helping them is at risk from Greyjoy revenge and decides to stay low and leave no traces of where they have gone, which includes not talking to people they may know. Too bad Rickon enjoys his walnut snacks and has been leaving a shell trail.

Jon Snow isn’t really faring any better than Theon with his own wildling woman. He wakes up, still spooning with Ygritte. They start walking, with Ygritte still tied up in front of him, looking for the Night’s Watch. Apparently wildling women are masters of the dirty talk, as she begins pestering him about screwing around, how he’s so pretty women would claw out each other’s eyes for a chance to get naked with him. Being Jon Snow he gets embarrassed- and fooled too easily. Ygritte breaks free and takes off running, so instead of a leisurely walk to find his mates, Snow finds himself chasing Ygritte (again), then lured into a low spot where he is eventually surrounded by wildling men. He’s either going to learn to think with his brains and not his boys. Either that or a bretty girl will end up being his downfall.

Arya is doing better while at Harelhall with Tywin Lannister. She is still his cupbearer, of course, and is witness to his rather quiet tirade of finding who the poisoned dart that killed Amory Lorch belongs to. He’s intent that someone tried to kill him, not his buffoon, but we know the truth- he’s eventually going to get hit. Could he be Name #3 for Jaqen? He may be spared, however- he deduces that Arya is a highborn for the simple fact that she addresses him as “my lord” rather than the more common peasantly “milord” title. Has he figured out that she is not some stone mason’s daughter, that she is actually a Stark? If he has, he’s not letting on- in fact, he gives her pointers on blending in better with the common folk.

In King’s Landing, the day has finally arrived- Lady Sansa Stark has had her first menstruation. Normally this would be a joyous day with Mom and Daughter to discuss the aspects of growing up, but we have to remember what this means. Now she’s able to bear Joffrey’s children, an idea that once pleased her but now scares her to death. She and Shae are attempting to flip the bed mattress in an attempt to hide the bloodstain, but they are spotted by another handmaiden, who rushes off to tell Cersei. As Shae hurries to exact silence from the girl, Sansa is found out by The Hound, who immediately takes her to Cersei. It’s here we begin to see a real change in the Queen, one I didn’t think capable of happening- Cersei feels for Sansa. She states that from birth Joffrey was difficult. She also admits that while Robert Baratheon refused to be in the same building as she was while she was giving birth, Jaime Lannister would not be kept out of the birthing room by anyone. “Love no one but your children,” she advises Sansa when the girl professes nothing but whole-hearted love for the king, “on that front a mother has no choice.” Does this mean she is finally realizing how much of a beast her son is?

Apparently so. Cersei then goes to Tyrion Lannister and he mentions what a terror the boy-king is. At least they agree on one thing- Joffrey is ill-prepared for the imminent war with Stannis Baratheon that is mere days away. Cersei has the though in the back of her mind that her incestuous relationship with her brother is the reason for Joffrey’s behavior, but Tyrion points out that the other two children are perfectly sane and well-adjusted. There is just something internally off with Joffrey. This seems to be the first time since the show started that these two are not throwing poisoned barbs at one another, and it is almost endearing. You feel for the predicament Cersei finds herself in, despite knowing she is the one who made this bed.

After the birds-and-bees chat with Cersei, Sansa is walking the halls of the castle and comes across The Hound. She attempts to thank him for saving her, but he shakes it off, saying “a dog doesn’t need courage to chase off rats.” He says he finds joy only in killing, and she’ll appreciate his callousness when she’s queen and there’s no one but him to stand between her and Joffrey. A twisted sense of nobility and honour, to be sure, but I’m almost liking him.
We haven’t forgotten about Robb Stark. He’s received word from King’s Landing (delivered by yet another Lannister cousin) that there will be no surrender from the crown. Rather than kill the messenger, he has the boy penned- with Jaime Lannister. They proceed to get chummy, being cousins and all, and when the boy leans a little too close, Jaime pops up and kills him. To make it worse, he then uses the body to lure in one of Robb’s guards, kill him too, then escape. Don’t worry- he is not free for long. Now it’s up to Catelyn Stark to keep the Northmen from killing him. But will she do it instead when Jaime begins opening his mouth and making comments about her own scattered family? Robb won’t stop her- he’s too busy trying to win a war while simultaneously trying to win the heart of Talisa.

We also get a chance to peek in on Daenerys Targeryen. Jorah has returned afer hearing about the kidnappings and finds Dany a wreck. Someone from The Thirteen has orchestrated this behind her back and she has no clue as to who. She can’t trust anyone, not even Xaro (which Jorah said all along), and with good measure. The Thirteen are called together to discuss the murders of the khalasar and the taking of the dragons, and in one fell swoop eleven of The Thirteen are killed by Xaro and Pyat Pree (the creepy bald magician guy- seriously, you had to see this one coming). Now Xaro is King of Qarth and Pree is telling Dany she can see her dragons again, but she has to come to the House of the Undying. Seems legit, like nothing will happen. How do I type in sarcasm?

One last thing before we stop until next week- Theon has returned to Winterfell and calls the people to the courtyard. Why? To show them the bodies of two children he has hung up, burned beyond recognition. That’s a good way to win friends and influence the people of the castle you just took by force, sir. Show them that their lord’s sons are dead and you are the one who killed them. Well done.

“Game of Thrones” continues its season on Sunday at 9E/8C on HBO, or anytiome on the HBO Go app for smartphones and now Xbox Live.

It’s early in the morning, but why not watch a trailer about a little girl possessed by a demon via an old wooden box? It’s never too early to watch parents agonize over their child’s unfortunate situation!

That is pretty much what is happening in “The Possession”. It looks like Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick play divorced parents and during a trip to a yard sale with her dad, their daughter picks up a strange box that won’t open. Eventually, she gets it open and moths and bats and demons start flying out, really just ruining her and mom and dad’s week.

There is a small amount of pedigree here as this is another horror movie produced by Sam Raimi. While Raimi is definitely a skilled director, these horror movies that he produces haven’t exactly been that great. “The Grudge”, “30 Days of Night”, “The Messengers”…all a big fat meh. That’s not a great track record, but “The Possession” actually looks quite terrifying and freaky. This may be one for non-horror buffs to keep an eye on.
