Since departing “The Office”, Steve Carell has been a very busy guy. He has six movies in the pipeline, most of which seem to be comedy/drama type movies. That also is the case for “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”, which involves an asteroid on a collision course to destroy Earth. After learning the news, Carell’s wife (apparently played by his real life wife Nancy) takes off in a panic leaving him alone to deal with the upcoming apocalypse. He meets Penny (Keira Knightly) and they embark on an adventure to find the people that they love.

As this is a road trip type of movie, there is an opportunity for plenty of interesting and quirky characters to run into. It looks like those characters will be played by Patton Oswalt, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Rob Huebel, Melanie Lynskey, Melinda Dillon, Derek Luke, William Peterson, and one of my personal favorites, T.J. Miller. It makes sense for some of these people to appear in the movie, as it was written and directed by Lorene Scafaria. Scafaria is one of the writers on the genius that is “Children’s Hospital”.

I’ve always felt that Carell was a bit robbed for not getting any real recognition for “Little Miss Sunshine”. The good news is that he showed that he can deliver a poignant and touching performance, without getting overly sentimental. “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” seems like it could be the kind of movie that delivers critically and commercially. Carell is already a massive star and there is definitely room for him to make a Bill Murray-type move into being taken seriously when award season rolls around.

Even though Matt Damon was able to escape the clutches of Treadstone, the covert operations are still around and filled the hole left behind Jason Bourne. Enter Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross in the latest in the Bourne franchise, ‘The Bourne Legacy.’ While the titular Bourne may be absent his time around there will still be a few familiar faces lurking within the Bourne universe like Joan Allen who is reprising her role as Pam Landy and a few new additions to the cast like Edward Norton.

So the question now is will people be interested in a Bourneless Bourne movie? Check out the trail and let us know what you think. I for one am in and ready to see how well Renner fits into the roll and the world of Jason Bourne. Like the trail says, there was never just one.

‘The Bourne Legacy’ hits theaters August 3rd, 2012.

I’m still curious to see how this movie goes over seeing as how child on child violence is a central part of the plot. The books have been very successful but movies often reach a much wider audience. It will be interesting to see the general public’s reaction.

‘The Hunger Games’ hit theaters March 23

There were several trailers that aired during last night’s Super Bowl. While the mockery was saved for “Battleship” (and rightfully so), the one trailer that should have gotten everyone’s attention is that of “The Avengers”. Maybe I’m a bit too geeked out over it, but it kind of gave me chills.

This trailer even gives us an idea of the much debated villain topic in the movie. Can there be any doubt that The Avengers will be going up against an invading alien army of some kind? For those of you that are really into Marvel Comics mythology, it looks like they are dealing with the Kree or Skrull invasion that is brought to Earth by Loki. It also establishes the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is definitely the lead dog here, which is really the way to go. I could go into how Captain America is the leader of The Avengers and was always the star of the show, but Downey is Downey and if not for the massive success of the first two “Iron Man” movies, “The Avengers” probably wouldn’t even exist. It definitely looks like Joss Whedon was the right choice as director and the chances of this movie being a letdown are quite slim.

May 4th can’t get here fast enough.

He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow’s beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out.

From visionary filmmaker JUAN CARLOS FRESNADILLO (28 Weeks Later, the upcoming Highlander reboot), INTRUDERS is the chilling story of two children living in different countries, each visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them.

It’s been puzzling to me how Cillian Murphy isn’t a big movie star at this point. He’s got himself into the team informally called The Christopher Nolan Players, which gets him in front of many, many eyeballs. Not only is he on Team Nolan, he’s kind of a part-time player for Danny Boyle’s Flying Circus, having appeared in two of his movies. In fact, I’d call “Sunshine” one of the more underrated sic-fi movies of the past ten years.

After several secondary roles, Murphy has another shot at leading man status in “Red Lights”. Here is the first trailer, which features a very pretty Elizabeth Olson and a very over the top looking Robert DeNiro.

“Red Lights” was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and received some so-so reception. Some people found it ridiculous, some found it thrilling and scary. The trailer certainly gives that it-could-go-either-way-vibe as well. Clearly, I think that Murphy is a great actor and Sigourney Weaver has a lifetime pass in my book based solely on the fact that she is Ellen Ripley, but my main hangup with this movie…is oddly Robert DeNiro. He’s been in nothing but average movies for over ten years and his last two truly great performances are probably “Ronin” and “Wag The Dog”. Other than that, he’s done nothing but go through the motions and collect paycheck after paycheck. He could potentially get very silly in this one, which can turn an intended thriller into a giggle factory.

There are always people who only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. It’s gotten a bit annoying for actual sports fans as the emphasis on this causes the game to last about four hours. However, now that movie studios are getting in on the act, it’s becoming more and more worthwhile to pay attention during the commercials for movie dorks like you…and me.

Here is an example of movie nerdom and advertising reaching epic levels of epicness. It’s a deadly combo of cute dogs barking…and the Imperial March from “Star Wars”.

Need more adorable dogs trying to convince you to buy a Volkswagon while staying on a “Star Wars” theme? Does the information in that question make your head explode? It did mine. Now watch.

Honestly, none of that makes sense. Fat dogs…dogs exercising…then Vader choking a guy out? Insanity. Let’s stay on the not making sense theme and look at the Super Bowl teaser for “G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation”. So, virtually nobody from the first movie is returning, we’ve added Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, and Jay-Z song lyrics are now dialogue? I am failing to see how this could be an improvement on the first movie, although it is so unbelievably brutal that there really is no where to go but up.

Finally, here’s a teaser for “The Dictator”. There’s really nothing new in it from previous trailers, other than a funny jab at NBC by star Sacha Baron Cohen. The best thing about this is that millions upon millions of people will hear perhaps the cruelest, meanest insult ever thrown at the Kardashian girls. By cruel and mean, I mean completely awesome.
