When someone mentions Judge Dredd what most people dread is that you might make them watch the 1995 Stallone film. Now there is a new Dredd on the horizon starring Karl Urban and it looks to stay away from the Rob Schneider slapstick and stay closer to the gritty source material of the 2000 AD comics. If you’re looking for proof to back up this claim just take a look at the new photos released from the film.

Just from the images the new Judge Dredd film is going to have a lot less one liners and a lot more exploding heads. ‘Dredd’ it slated to theaters September 21st, 2012.

Even though Matt Damon was able to escape the clutches of Treadstone, the covert operations are still around and filled the hole left behind Jason Bourne. Enter Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross in the latest in the Bourne franchise, ‘The Bourne Legacy.’ While the titular Bourne may be absent his time around there will still be a few familiar faces lurking within the Bourne universe like Joan Allen who is reprising her role as Pam Landy and a few new additions to the cast like Edward Norton.

So the question now is will people be interested in a Bourneless Bourne movie? Check out the trail and let us know what you think. I for one am in and ready to see how well Renner fits into the roll and the world of Jason Bourne. Like the trail says, there was never just one.

‘The Bourne Legacy’ hits theaters August 3rd, 2012.

I’m still curious to see how this movie goes over seeing as how child on child violence is a central part of the plot. The books have been very successful but movies often reach a much wider audience. It will be interesting to see the general public’s reaction.

“We were told that we were going to labor camps, going to school, and being relocated. Other people believed this, but my father didn’t. He got a group of young people together and said to them, ‘Look, this is what the story is, but I DON’T believe it! I don’t think you’re going to labor camps and being relocated.’ My father was right, most of us didn’t go to any resettlement. We went to our death.” – Jack Garfein

Jack Garfein

Acclaimed director Jack Garfein (“Something Wild,” “The Strange One”) spoke at the University of North Texas last week about his life as a theatre-film artist. Mr. Garfein suffered and survived the horrors of a concentration camp at the age of 13, and became a successful Broadway director after immigrating to the United States.

“My mother said, ‘If you’re courageous enough, tear off your star and take my hand; we we’ll go through the town.’ I said, ‘Mamma, the drummer announced it’s Martial law; any Jew on the street will be killed.’ And she said, ‘Well, I’ll tell you something. That’s a better death than how we’re going to be dealt with.’”

Jack Garfein only spoke briefly about his Holocaust experience; as you can probably imagine, it’s a very emotional subject. He spoke about how he and his family were taken from their home in Czechoslovakia and put in Germany’s infamous Auschwitz. After spending two years at the camp, the camp was liberated by U.S. troops, but Garfein was the only member of his family that survived.

Auschwitz

He eventually made his way to America and took acting classes at the Dramatic Workshop in New York City, and he also joined The Actors Studio. After appearing on stage, he worked his way up on Broadway, where he directed his first hit play at the age of 25. He directed two of Arthur Miller’s plays and a number of others, working with many notable actors.

I found it remarkable that I met the man that was responsible for the start of many famous actors’ careers; many of whom are idols of mine. There were two stories that he talked about that completely amazed me. One, when he was working on his first directed play.

James Dean

“When I was working on my first directed play, the older and more known actors (at the time) wouldn’t work with me. ‘He’s young. He’s new. He doesn’t know anything,‘ they would say. So I had to work with inexperienced actors. I worked with this one dishwasher named James Dean. He was just starting out, and the producers didn’t want me to have inexperienced actors. But I told them, ‘I make it with them or I don’t make it at all.’”

James Dean is one of my favorite actors of all-time, and to think what it would have been like if Jack Garfein hadn’t cast him in his play… Would James Dean have gone on to make “Rebel Without a Cause,” “East of Eden,” or “Giant?”

The other story was about him working with Marilyn Monroe, who was just starting out in her career as an actress. This story was very personal, and after seeing the film “My Week with Marilyn,” it struck my fancy. In this story he talked about how he and Marilyn went shopping together after rehearsing one day, and how she wanted him to hold her hand while they walked around.

Marilyn Monroe

“‘I just got married, and my wife [Carroll Baker, who he directed in "Something's Wild"] is doing a film in the south; I’m not looking for any trouble, Marilyn,’ I told her. She said, ‘Don’t be stupid, Jack. Okay, you know what? We’ll go in this coffee shop here, and we’ll sit next to each other, and if nobody recognizes me– you’ll stop being stupid and you’ll take my hand!’ We went into the coffee shop, and I got her a drink and served her. We sat down, and not one person asked her for an autograph. So when we left she said, ‘see,‘ and I replied with, ‘okay.’ So I took her hand and we went down the strip… I always felt that Marilyn was testing the honesty of men. I was a young man, and she was a beautiful woman. Obviously, certain things were happening. And I could see that she enjoyed having that kind of fun, that kind of game with me. I met with her a few more times, but not again for many years. And about 2 years before she passed away, I walked into a restaurant and I see Marilyn with her secretary on a Saturday night. I said, ‘Marilyn? Saturday night, with a secretary? What’s going on?’ She looked at me: ‘Hey there, Jack, you want to leave your wife? What do you suggest?’ You know what I suggested? ’Marilyn, you should move to Paris. You’ll be the heroine of France.’ Marilyn said, ‘You ready to leave your wife and go with me, Jack? But do you remember that day when we went shopping? You said something to me, do you remember what it was? I was going through a difficult time in my life, and what you said to me helped me get through it. Do you remember?’ Well, like any man, I lied: ‘yes!’ She looked into my eyes: ‘Well, what was it?’ ‘I don’t want to say it, Marilyn,’ I told her. ‘You’re lying. You don’t remember; it was very important to me.’ ‘Really, I remember; I just don’t want to get into it.’ And then, I left. My friends called me a ‘schmuck’ for the longest time after that. The terrible part was after her death I saw her secretary at another restaurant, and she came up to me and said, ‘You know, Marilyn really loved you. Like really loved you. I just wanted to tell you that, Jack. She talked a lot about you.’ This made me feel awful because I could never remember what I told her that day when we went shopping…”

The story with Marilyn ended rather sadly, but he went on to talk about another story in which he saw her naked. Nothing happened, so get your mind out of the gutter!

Yes, he worked with James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, but he also helped advance the careers of Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and Ben Gazzara.

Paul Newman

On top of working with all these great actors, directing two major films, and making a documentary called “The Journey Back,” which he chronicles his return to Auschwitz, he is also known as one of the most experienced teachers of method acting. He taught in France and London for more than 40 years. In 1966, he became the director of The Actors Studio and created the Harold Clurman Theatre in New York City.

Jack Garfein, 81, has a wonderful book out now called Life and Acting: Techniques for the Actor. You should check it out and read more about him, and how he impacted the stage and Hollywood. He’s a great man.

Another Friday, another visit to Capua for fans of “Spartacus: Vengeance”. This week Steven DeKnight, creator of the series, has allowed us a peek into the early life of the future Doctore, Oenomaus. Before he was training gladiators for the arena, he was fighting for his life in The Pit. Imagine the darkest, most dangerous place in the world, filled with the most violent of all criminals. Multiply that by about a thousand and you have The Pit. This is a dank place where gladiators fight without the pageantry of the arena, where the fight is all about blood, death, and money. Oenomaus is brought into the House of Batiatus by Titus Batiatus (Jeffrey Thomas- look for him in “The Hobbit” this winter), Quintus’ father, after fighting in The Pit and is slowly groomed from slave to gladiator. It is under Titus’ tutelage that he begins to find what he feels is a purpose in his life as a fighter and trainer. It’s when he is branded with the house mark that he realizes the dreams he has are not his own, but merely those of his Dominus. Once the house has fallen, Oenomaus returns to The Pit, possibly in hopes of finding an honourable death after turning on Quintus Batiatus in search of his freedom.

This wouldn’t be an episode of “Spartacus” without our title character. Spartacus is leading his band south, keeping his word to Crixus that they would find Naevia. Along the way they free Roman house slaves, and those who want to stay with the band are taken in. They do run into one slave named Tiberius, who attacks Spartacus for killing his Dominus. Spartacus spares him and begins instead teaching him to fight. This in turn shows Tiberius that while his station was high within the slave ladder of the Roman house, he was still just a slave. This is simply a step by Spartacus to create an army that is united by allegiance to the same cause.

Illithya is still in Capua with Claudias Glaber, as well as a cleaned-up Lucretria. Knowing that somewhere in the broken Domina’s mind is the knowledge of her murdering Licinia (Spartacus: Blood and Sand), Illithya has begun testing what Lucretia remembers. She’s regaining bits and pieces, and that is clearly unsettling to Illithya. It’s going to be interesting to watch this relationship unfold for what it is as Lucretia regains her memories. Glaber is still hunting the rogue band of slaves, but now is also dealing with Seppius in hopes of an allegience. Seppius has enough men to go after Spartacus and win, where Glaber does not, but the talks between the praetor and citizen are quickly deteriorating. It’s also revealed in this episode the identity of the person who brings Oenomaus out of The Pit and back to the House of Batiatus to stand before Glaber.

“Spartacus: Vengeance” is shown on Starz every Friday at 10e/9c. If you haven’t already set it to record weekly, you really should.
