Will Billy Bob Thornton Be ‘Bad Santa’ Once More?
For awhile now, sprinkled into interviews every now and then, Billy Bob Thornton would be asked about the genius that is “Bad Santa” and he would express interest in playing Willie once more. It’s easy to see why he would be into that role as it had to be a blast for him to play. He’s never really had a chance to be so over the top obnoxiously funny prior to that movie. Usually, Thornton is reserved for playing dim witted southerners, ridiculous antagonists in big budget action movies, or men that get to have sex with Halle Berry even though there is an exact zero percent chance that would actually ever happen.
It looks like Thornton is going to put the Santa suit on again and make good on his word. In a recent interview, Thornton said they hope to start filming late this year and have it ready for a 2013 Christmas release. Now, who is directing or writing “Bad Santa 2″ is still up in the air. It doesn’t sound like original director Terry Zwigoff is going to be behind the camera, as he hasn’t directed anything since the very, very awful “Art School Confidential”.
While I’m all for a “Bad Santa” sequel, it will be a bit sad as some of the best scenes in the original featured John Ritter and Bernie Mac, who have both died since its release. Ritter was such an underrated funny man and this was easily Mac’s finest role. Of course, it would be difficult to explain Bernie Mac’s character returning as he (spoiler alert) was hit by a van and killed in the movie.
