Nick Cave To Do Rewrites For ‘The Crow’ Remake

James O’Barr’s “the Crow” is one of my all-time favorite pieces of literature. Yes, I’m one of those people who consider graphic novels to be literature. While there are many of you out there who have just written them off as over-sized comic books, if you’ve actually gone to the trouble of reading things like “The Dark Knight Returns”, “Signal to Noise” or “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, you already know the truth of my statement. However, Hollywood likes to take these works and distill them into nothing but colorful explosions. When “the Crow” came out in 1992, the cultural synergy let it retain most of its bleak, gothy goodness. While not perfect, it was a resonant piece of pop culture. Of course almost twenty years, a few forgettable sequels and a series that starred the Chairman from “Iron Chef America”, someone’s decided it was time for a remake, reboot, reimagining or whatever the hell they’re calling it this week.

I came out with this little nugget around October of last year that Relativity Media and director Stephen Norrington (who notoriously butchered the aforementioned “League”) were teaming up to bring us an updated version of “The Crow” that would be “gritty and urban” – which has been all the rage since Chris Nolan’s Batman films struck gold. Now the latest to come out of Crowland – according to The Wrap -  is that musician and screenwriter Nick Cave is being brought in to do some rewrites to Norrington’s script that was previously described as “Terrific.”

Cave bringing his “Red Right Hand” of screenplay skills to this isn’t just a gimmick, though. Cave made a splash with his screenplay for the Aussie western “the Proposition” in 2005 and was named as one of the ten screenwriters to watch in 2006 by Variety.

I’m still not sold on the idea of this new “Crow” movie, but there may be a little hope that it’s not as craptastic as it could be.
