Minions Defeat Vampires, Werevolves: ‘Despicable Me’ Knocks ‘Eclipse’ Out Of Top Spot
Aren’t vampires supposed to live forever? Universal’s CG animated family film “Despicable Me” trounced last week’s box office winner, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” with an estimated $60.1 million this weekend. “Eclipse,” after raking in the cash last weekend, squeaked out an estimated additional $33 million in its sophomore weekend, for an eleven-day total of $237 million domestically.
Nimrod Antal’s “Predators” performed better than expected, with a third-place weekend finish and an estimated $25.3 million.
The dip for “Eclipse,” just under 50 percent from last weekend (remember, there was a monsterous Wednesday and Thursday padding the stats), was far smaller than “New Moon,” which dove over 70 percent in its second week.
“Toy Story 3″ continued to bring in audiences, bringing in an estimated $22 million, for a four-week total domestic take of $340.2 million. This makes “Toy Story 3″ the highest grossing Pixar film of all time domestically.
Focus Features’ “The Kids Are All Right” opened in limited release this weekend, and boasts the best opening screen average of the year at $72,127. The film grossed an estimated $504,888 at seven locations.
