A Hint At The Story Before ‘District 9′

District 9

But what happened before they were moved to District 9? Wouldn't you like to know!

According to the fine folks over the L.A. Times (via Chris Campbell over on Cinematical), Neill Blomkamp is intrigued by the idea of doing a prequel to his underdog success “District 9“, possibly before or instead of doing a sequel wherein the true hero of the story returns.  (If you don’t know what I mean, you probably haven’t seen it yet, which means you need to high-tail it out the door and pick up the Bluray ASAP!)

Unlike other prequels we’ve been privy to, such as “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, there is a certain class and talent that goes into telling the story before the story.  It requires a kind of eye towards continuity that allows the masterful to weave a deeper appreciation of the original tale, and that is much harder to pull off successfully than you might think.  The good news is that the original story was so simple in its empathic invocation that a prequel could provide a lot more meat to what is already a compelling universe for us.

The bad news is that it could make the original look like a two-bit amateur production.  Seriously – imagine if these guys actually had a budget!  Think of the amazing things they could do!

At any rate, no decisions have been made, though the intention for the team to continue is clear.  We like that.

About Dawn Ellis

Dawn Ellis is a movie snob in the same way that punks are music snobs: she likes what she likes, but it doesn't always make sense. Don't get in front of her in traffic, don't stand behind her at the grocery store, but feel free to comment on her reviews at any time. Her other writing credits include working at the National Healthy Food Examiner, having a handful of articles over at Suite101, being in a couple of magazines, and currently shopping around her most recent full-length science fiction novel. Dawn's also been known to pen a screenplay or two but hadn't found a sucker in Hollywood to pick them up yet.

Sure, we'd love to think that we're solving all of society's ills, or curing cancer, or stopping Uwe Boll from adapting more video games into horrible films. None of these, sadly, are feasible at this time. [...Read More About RCC]
