Kidman Admits Movies Are Violent
Testifying in front of a U.S. House Foreign Affairs subcommittee, Australian actress Nicole Kidman, herself there on behalf of the U.N. Development Fund for Women as a goodwill ambassador (wanted to get the full international scope in that sentence), admitted that Hollywood’s portrayal of women as submissive sexual objects “probably†contributes to violence against women.
According to MSN, Kidman testified in front of the committee as they considered a bill “to address violence against women overseas through humanitarian relief efforts and grants to local organizations working on the problem.â€
Kidman pointed out that since she recognizes the problems, she avoids such roles, that “I can’t be responsible for all of Hollywood but I can certainly be responsible for my career,†later adding “In the real world, the laws go unenforced and impunity is the norm.â€
The committee hopes to reintroduce legislation soon, with Kidman encouraging them to send some of the funding to the U.N. Development Fund for Women.
