MGM Shelves Poltergeist Remake… For Now.

News like this gives me hope for the future of moviemaking in Hollywood – not much but some. Bloody Disgusting.com is reporting that MGM has put the brakes on the Poltergeist remake. They cite the reason as being that there wasn’t enough time to make it by their previously quoted November 2010 release date. So, it has been moved to a still yet-to-be-determined 2011 date.

One might also read into it that MGM’s recently revealed financial troubles (here and here) could have something to do with putting the remake on the back burner. Poltergeist, unlike most horror remakes, is probably not one of those movies that could be made on the cheap and most certainly, MGM couldn’t soak making a high priced bomb.

Take it as you will. With any luck, we’ll have dodged this bullet in Hollywood’s game of Remake Roulette.
