Get There Early – September 9, 2009
Watch out, kiddies! This first one is NSFW/K! After that, it’s Woody Harrelson and Rachel Weisz. Growrl!
Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (Red Band)
What is the difference between a good sequel and a bad sequel? In most cases, it’s a matter of carrying through the spirit of the original (if, indeed, the original was worth watching). In the case of “the Boondock Saints”, what made it such an incredible film was not the violence or the carefully choreographed action scenes: it was the fact that the heroes were reluctant in their violence and that their action didn’t seem choreographed at all. It was raw and instinctive, the brothers’ actions a result of being raised in a terror- and war-ravaged society. Despite the awesome presence of Billy Connelly, it looks like the filmmakers may have missed the boat on this one. I guess we’ll find out October 30, 2009.
Defendor
… Wow.
My first impression is that someone saw the poorly-paced and painful-to-watch “Special” and said, “I can do that better.” Unfortunately, that leaves a lot of room to still be sub-par. From the trailer, I’m not sure if it’s a “parody action” flick or a “delusional crazy person” flick or a “schizophrenic guy’s world gone horribly wrong” flick. That’s not promising, despite the presence of both the yummy Kat Dennings and the slightly unstable Woody Harrelson. I might take a miss on this one when it comes out September 12, 2009, but I will admit to probably watching it on DVD, because at home, no one can see you cringe.
Agora
I really, really hope this movie is as good as the trailer makes it out to be. The Agora was an open place for assembly and the single-most important location in Ancient Greece where politics, religion, market, and common issues were all handled. Just to get it all cleared up right here, what I’m telling you is that the title is the place, not the woman portrayed by the beautiful Rachel Weisz. She’s playing Hypatia of Alexandria during the sacking of Alexandria by the Persians, and when it comes to Incredible Historical Female Role Models, Hypatia is definitely in the Top 4. We’ll find out on December 18, 2009.
