‘Destination,’ Bullock Outpace ‘Extract’ At Box Office
“The Final Destination” pulled in an estimated $12.4 million, lifting its total to $47.6 million in ten days. The horror sequel had a steeper drop than its predecessors, falling over 55 percent from the previous week. Nonetheless, it surpassed the final gross of “Final Destination 2,” and will soon top the other Final Destination movies.
Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper’s romantic comedy “All About Steve” bagged an estimated $11.2 million, good enough for second place. The movie was almost universally panned by critics, but an ad campaign showing Bullock’s goofy antics and the same klutzy demeanor that made her so endearing in movies like “Miss Congeniality” brought in female audiences that weren’t into the “Destination” gore.
“Gamer” attempted to provide some testosterone counter-punch for “Steve,” but posted a low score of an estimated $9 million. The premise of people forced to play a deadly game show has been mined to middling effect in past titles like “Death Race” and “The Running Man,” but “Gamer” failed to stand out in its look and feel, despite its video game avatar hook.
The weekend’s other nationwide debut, writer-director Mike Judge’s “Extract,” drew a soft estimated $4.2 million, coming in tenth overall. Judge’s “Office Space,” became an audience favorite long after its theatrical release, while “Extract”‘s premise was not clearly presented and came off as random stoner and workplace antics.
