Flash Cuts: August 4, 2009

Director Renny Harlin, known for action flicks such as “Die Hard 2,” “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” and “Deep Blue Sea,” has been tapped for some more serious subject matter: the five-day conflict between Russia and neighboring country Georgia. According to Variety, the film will shoot in and around the actual locations where the conflict occurred, beginning in mid-September. The script focuses on an American journalist and his camera crew caught in the crossfire.

When Zach Snyder begins work on his next film, “Sucker Punch,” he’ll at least one familiar face on set. The Hollywood Reporter scribes have Carla Gugino signing on to a cast that already includes Vanessa Hudgins and Jena Malone. “Sucker Punch,” called “‘Alice in Wonderland’ with machine guns,” begins shooting in Vancouver in the fall.

iPhone and iPod Touch users will be able to use the Netflix Watch instantly streaming service, according to a report in Multichannel News. The app will work off WiFi connections (not the AT&T 3G servers, which creak under any added weight from iPhone users), but will be able to access any of the content available on the computers and game consoles Netflix services. The report doesn’t have a timeframe on when we can expect to see the app.
